Attend a Lucha Libre wrestling match in Mexico City
YOUR PEOPLE
With the crowd whipped up into a state of frenzy, watching Lucha Libre is an edge-of-the seat spectacle like no other, where families and friends of all ages gather to shout, swear and let off steam in a highly entertaining – and uniquely Mexican – fashion. Raucous, unruly and over the top, Mexico’s version of professional wrestling is the ultimate spectator sport.
Divided into técnicos (the good guys who follow the rules), and rudos (the bad guys people love to hate who do anything it takes to win), the luchadors combine stunts, showmanship and storytelling in a battle for good versus evil. Wearing colourful masks to protect their identities, the flamboyant fighters take on cult legend status as real life superheroes or villains.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Whether you experience a Lucha Libre wrestling show in Mexico City, or in a smaller arena like Puebla, you’re in for the night of your life – the anticipation is electric. The fighters arrive amid a huge fanfare of flashing lights, music and special effects. Removing their capes, they’ll rile the crowd up, who respond with boos and cheers, hurling insults at the top of their voices.
Facing off in the ring, the masked wrestlers engage in choreographed dives, acrobatic flips and dramatic stunts – like high-flying scissor kicks and wheelbarrow holds – to defeat their opponents. The showdown often spills out into the aisles, much to the audience’s delight. When a winner is declared, the luchador ends the show with their signature move, posing for the adoring crowd.
WHAT OUR COMMUNITY SAYS
SOLO photographer Nima Taradji went behind the scenes to experience Lucha Libre, wanting to understand the culture and traditions behind the fantastical world of Mexican wrestling. “As a photographer so close to the action, I learnt to move quickly and figured out where not to be,“ he says. “I’ve been at fights where chairs have been thrown through the air, someone jumps into the ring illegally or the wrestling spills out into the audience. If you get in the way, it’s too bad.”
Regarding the nation’s passion for the sport, he explains: “Lucha Libre first came into existence in 1933 during the Great Depression when the gap between the rich and the poor was as significant as it is now. Today, it’s still a narrative and a force that comes from the people. It represents working-class power from within.”
