Guatemala Trips

Why travel solo to Guatemala?

Delve into this landscape of mystical ruins and lush volcanoes, and you’ll find yourself falling fast for Guatemala.

Bordered by the Pacific to the east and the Caribbean to the west, this Central American destination exudes a tropical allure that adventurers among you will find irresistible. The azure waters of Lake Atitlan, formed from a vast volcanic crater, may be one of the country’s most beautiful sights. Ringed by a series of volcanoes in the Sierra Madre mountain range, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for off-grid adventure here, from invigorating hikes to lake kayaking.

Not too far away, you’ll find Antigua Guatemala, the country’s former capital. Small but brimming with historical character, this charming city offers the perfect introduction to Guatemalan culture.

In the far north by the Belize border, the temples of Tikal peek out through the dense rainforest. Uncover the legacy of the Maya in one of the most atmospheric settings imaginable, alongside a host of wildlife native to the rainforest.

Our two Guatemalan adventures are curated to bring out the very best of this enchanting destination.

Top places to visit in Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala

Formerly the seat of Spanish power in the region, Antigua served as a cultural, economic and religious hub for more than 200 years before the city was largely destroyed by earthquakes in the 17th century. Many of the colonial buildings have now been rebuilt or restored. As well as a rich history, Antigua has a lively cultural scene of music and festivals, while the center is packed with excellent restaurants and bars.

Lake Atitlán

This spellbinding lake is surrounded by beautiful traditional villages that you could spend an age exploring, but it’s the lake itself that draws in travelers again and again. The lake’s aquamarine surface is frequented by rustic fishing boats, plying their trade in the water’s depths. Here, lush green hill dot the landscape, while the volcanoes are ever looming in the distance.

Reserva Natural Atitlán

This natural reserve is a former coffee plantation that has been slowly reclaimed by nature. A slow walk through the reserve takes you over a swing bridge, past a waterfall and over to a viewing platform where you can see spider monkeys in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes open for other animals too, coatis and hummingbirds abound in this natural paradise.

Tikal National Park

Tikal National Park is home to an ancient Mayan citadel and is located in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. This park contains 575 square kilometers of jungle and thousands of ruined structures that leave clues as to the extraordinary nature of this ancient Mayan civilization, so there’s plenty to explore.
