Trips to Finland
Why travel solo to Finland?
What's the temperature like?
Winter in northern Finland is cold, dark and snowy. The sun sets in late November and doesn’t rise above the horizon again until mid-January. It won’t be dark all day though, as the snow reflects light creating a sort of twilight. Temperatures average -8°C (18°F) during the day and -17°C (1.4°F) at night.
Top three activities
1. Snowmobile across frozen wilderness
2. Glide through the forest on a husky ride
3. Take an icy dip followed by a wood-fired sauna
Top five dishes to try
1. Baltic herring – freshly salted, fried, baked or smoked
2. Vispipuuro – dessert porridge made of berries
3. Lohikeitto – salmon and potato soup
4. Karjalanpiirakka – Karelian pastries
5. Kalakukko – fish wrapped in bacon and baked in bread
Top places to visit in Finland
Helsinki
Finland’s capital is located on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. A laidback city that prides itself on its sustainability and green ethos, Helsinki is also a design lover’s delight thanks to its smart, colourful architecture and cucumber-cool collection of galleries, boutiques and interior shops.
Rovaniemi
If you want to visit the “official” hometown of Santa Claus, head to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland in northern Finland. From early June to early July you can experience the midnight sun, while a trip to Arktikum, a museum and science centre, will help you explore the Arctic region and history of Finnish Lapland.
Muonio
This town is located in northern Finland, above the Arctic Circle. Head to the banks of the Muonio River for some of the cleanest air in the world. Its pollution-free skies make for one of the best spots to see the Northern Lights. From here, you can grab some skis or hop on a trip into the Finnish wilderness.
Torassieppi
Torassieppi is in the heart of Finnish Lapland and the perfect destination for winter sports. From ice-fishing and snow-shoeing to snowmobile adventures, this small area of Finland is a winter wonderland.
