WHY TRAVEL SOLO TO CAMBODIA?
Cambodia has long since cast off the shadow of its turbulent past to become one of Southeast Asia’s most popular destinations for solo travellers.
Anyone who’s visited Cambodia will tell you that this is a country of uplifting optimism and beauty. There’s the fallen grandeur of Angkor Wat – the world’s largest temple complex – the re-energized cityscape of Phnom Penh and the white-sand beaches of Koh Rong and the Southern Islands.
Cambodian cuisine overlaps with its famously culinary neighbours, from the crispy fried bananas well known in Thailand to the fragrant larb salads characteristic of Laos cooking. But there’s plenty that’s individual and unique to Cambodia, too: fish amok cooked in coconut and lemongrass cream, grilled squid and fresh beef salads dressed in lime juice. As well as the country’s first and only artisan gin distillery.
Once you get your first taste of Cambodia, this is a country that will keep you coming back for more.
Top places to visit in Cambodia
Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s capital is a city that demands your attention through honking horns and colourful markets. Take a tour around its ornate palaces and temples before heading down to the riverside promenade to watch the city go by with a beer in hand.
Siem Reap
The temple-fringed city of Siem Reap is surrounded by a wealth of natural wonders. The surrounding villages offer serenity and a snapshot of local life.
Angkor
The ancient city of Angkor is a real showstopper. Ornate ancient temples abound, from multi-faced Bayon, Angkor Thom and jungle-covered Ta Prohm. These intricately carved temples date from as far back as the 12th and 13th centuries.
Koh Rong
This formerly jungle-clad wilderness has become an escape for those looking for sugar-fine beaches. Venture further away from the village you’ll discover the island’s natural charms, where a somnambulant frog chorus emanates from lush forest.
